West Colonnade Roof Repairs

Completion date: May 2018

As part of Vanbrugh’s design, the intention was to extend the colonnade to enclose the North Courtyard, however, only the east and west sections were ever constructed. The west section now requires substantial repair due to leaks in the roof which have led to the plaster ceiling of the Colonnade to become fragile, resulting in the gradual cracking and disintegration of the plasterwork.

The patch repairs over the years have kept most of the water out, however, the roof now needs to be refurbished involving lifting and reworking the lead sheet. The lead will be recycled and taken to a foundry in the Midlands to be re-cast and re-installed. In addition, any damaged timber and stonework will be repaired.
